Welcome to Brimwood Farm; a backyard garden, a lot of animals, vegetables and flowers coming out my ears, and BIG dreams for the future. We only have one Earth so we have to nurture what we have - and that means growing our own food, going organic and trying to be as sustainable as possible.
For as long as I remember, I've wanted to be a farmer. In my late teens i got sidetracked by the bright lights of London and off I went to university, leaving my failing grandfather and the family farm behind (DOH). Now, I'm trying to work my way back to that little oasis in East Anglia (UK) to live the farming dream. And it all starts here; in an ordinary suburban garden growing vegetables, plants, and poultry.
Join me on my journey towards self-sufficiency and the smallholding lifestyle.

POLYTUNNEL Tour | Vegetables to Grow NOW for SPRING ABUNDANCE
Hey it all looks really good considering all the challenges this year. I'm a great believer in just letting dahlias be, and nigella self seed wonderfully after a time. And a very lovely lamb!
I'm normally the same with the dahlias ... I just can't believe they survived standing water!
You sound much cheerier this time round ...so pleased for you. ❤
Definitely! Was a rough week before!
Hope you are doing good ❤
I am thanks!
The government told me that this was the hottest spring ever so naturally i trusted them
Nice to have sunny days!
Oh no. Hope there has been some improvement. Poor Horus that’s awful. Hope things are looking up a bit now. Lambs will be lovely.
What a brave little Horus! I hope he recovers very quickly after his op. I had a beautiful one eyed cat who lived to be nearly 20 yrs old. Stay strong Geoff😻
Thank you. I love that!! My precious cat was 21 - he was a trooper. And though Horus was only ever a farm cat, he's lodged himself into my heart now 😍
Hello Geoff, sorry to hear about all the challenges! Sounds like you have had it very tough. But admire your resilience and positivity. You are doing some wonderful things on the farm 😊👍
Thanks Amir ☺️
Get well soon 😊
Thank you 😊
Sorry to hear about all the difficulties. I hope things improve soon. It might be better to see if you can find a vet who uses homeopathy. They tend to be more about care and less about profit. Also, there aren't the huge range of side-effects that drugs have. Re blackbirds - are they afraid of birds of prey? You can get kites (as in the thing that kids fly) for pest control which are designed like different birds of prey. You can suspend in the air using a flexible pole, tree branch etc. Not sure how efficient they are.
I think that could work re: the blackbird. Will have to give it a go!
Thank you for what you are doing, you are amazing. He is absolutely lovely, it’s so unfair that these things happen. I hope he can be saved and go on to live a comfortable life, he deserves it especially after the ordeal he’s been through. Please show him lots of love!
Getting better day by day and surgery half funded now 😊😊
Poor baby good luck
Thank you 😊
Wishing you all the best! 🩷
Thank you!
Veg box looks great. Flowers are beautiful.
Thanks so much. I'm always astounded at the flowers!
I hope the weather has improved slightly. It has been rubbish.
It's getting there!
He's such a lovely cat, i hope more people donate so he can be saved 🤞
Fingers crossed. I reckon with a little haggling with vet and making up the rest myself, we can get the surgery for him. 🤞🏻
Keep going! Remember how far you have come and that yes, there are always ways to keep going and keep improving whilst also needing to maintain what you have but that’s all part of the fun even if it is a juggling act. You’re still doing a great job xx
Thank you! Yes, easy to forget just how much has been achieved already. 😊
Awk Geoff I'm so sorry for your troubles. That's a lot going on! I feel sorry for Horis, (I had a rabbit named Horis... And a horse named Bunny) but £1000?? Sorry but no. As sad as it would be I couldn't justify that either. Sorry about the chicks too. That's rough man! I'm glad to see your animal-pecked market garden is producing tho! And lamb stew.... Yum! 😂😂 And lamb babies!
Can't wait for lamb stew - it's going to taste soooo good!
I'm so glad to hear horis is doing so much better and others are helping toward the costs! 😻😻
Just potted 3 white and 3 purple... thanks for these helpful tips and info.. 1st time I've ever potted anything.
So sorry you're going through it at the moment. I had a bad run last summer, so I totally understand how demoralising it can be sometimes. Keep going! Things can only get better.. 🤗
It really can, can't it?! Especially when it all happens at once!
What a time for you Geoff. But I so admire you finding some positivity as well, while taking all that nature can throw at you! And probably howling at the moon!
Maybe I should try some howling at the moon ... might help?? 😅
Just want to wish you lots of good luck and good health for all your livestock.
Thank you :)
My neighbours have a fake flying hawk that is attached to a line. Maybe that might help with the blackbirds. Could you set up a go fund me for the cat?
Now THAT is a great idea .... would probably deter pigeons too! I have thought about a Go Fund me. I'm going to assess the situation at next vet's visit and see where we're at.
Hey Geoff. Sorry you have had troubles with your dog, cat, birds can escaping sheep. It's good to know that you have some positives and some summer lambs on the way and you are selling produce. I hope this all helps. The weather has improved for you, it's even improved for us up here and we can hopefully soon have the contractor come in and do us a cut for baled silage. We think you are doing a great job Geoff. Thanks for this vid. 🤓🐶🧔
It's definitely FINALLY the weather for cutting; all my neighbours are making hay this weekend! And thank you :D
@@BrimwoodFarm Yes, it's cutting weather, you neighbours are haymaking, it's to early to make hay here, we don't make any, just silage. You are welcome. 🤓🐶🧔
Vets are such conmen, if you can get a prescription look online and the drugs are a 4th of the price.
Yep! I used to work as a veterinary nurse and once the practice heard the 'insured' word, it became even worse in terms of charging for extras.
✌️😎
There is nothing quite as stressful as (a) sheep that is an escaper, especially when the rest of them do the “she’s escaped” baaaaaa and then on the flip there is nothing as relaxing as watching contented sheep munching. Chickens are the same! So glad about the ducks, especially the surprise Appleyards ❤. Poor Horace, I think what makes it even worse, if that’s possible, is that vet practices have changed so much - it seems to be an all or nothing approach and the all is SO expensive and if you don’t take that option you are made to feel like you are failing your pet - but even 10 years ago and definitely before that all these scans and crazy prices were not normal. A decent vet would have compassionately told you that you could try for a few days, but perhaps PTS was the right thing - and even without the fractured skull the eye removal wouldn’t have been that much. Don’t feel bad, all Horace will know is that you tried and you cared and loved him ❤❤❤
Oh, you hit the nail on the head .. with both the sheep and the vets! I love my sheep but they can be SO frustrating. Missy and Lola are now contained so (hopefully) it'll be a little more peaceful!
I'm sorry to hear you have had a terrible week, we all get times like that, always try to focus on the good and don't feel bad if you have to think sensibley about your cat. Luv from the 🇬🇧
Thanks Jackie. Definitely trying to focus on the good 😌
Sorry to hear the week has been so rough, farming sounds just like the gift that keeps on giving! It’s sad to hear about little Horus, I hope he improves but I understand your decision, poor thing. It’s lovely to see the new chicks coming on well and I’m excited to see new lambs. I hope your luck improves and the sun continues to shine
Thanks Kerry. Sun certainly makes things feel a lot better!
I feel your pain, Geoff! Though we are a farm animal rescue, we go through similar bouts of “What else on EARTH could possibly go wrong?!” Between gardening, animals, finances, family, and so much more, I think anyone with a farm is juggling a lot! Looking forward to a calmer season for you! 🤞 You are doing such a great job!
Doesn't it all seem to come at once too?? Some calm(ish) times and then everything goes to chaos. And thank you 😊
Early flowering is a survival technique in adverse conditions.
And boy have we had adverse conditions!
Maybe getting rid of the sheep would make you less stressed, and give you more time for the other animals
Definitely less stress but also less enjoyment. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment, but I love the sheep. I think I just have to be ruthless in terms of getting rid of any individual sheep that shows bad behaviour.
At least I’m not alone with the pheasant chicks… about 4 weeks ago I had hatched out 5 lady Amherst chicks after two weeks they had all died. I think it were because they weren’t eating enough. They gave no warning, they just died. My male have really not been breeding the females. Almost no eggs er fertile. I just hatched out 1 lady Amherst with 6 araucana chicks, I sure hope it will survive a little bit longer… Love your content. Gotta look up to a professional pheasant keeper😅
Hahaha, thanks. I have the same. Chicks look fine and then only 30 minutes later sometimes, they're just dead. Once I began feeding insects on top of the pheasant crumb things definitely improved; but they are fragile things!
How do you stop a blackbird? With a scarecrow? Wish your animals well.
Thank you. I don't think a scarecrow would work as he happily scratches around even when I'm there!
It was a tough watch, this episode, and the situation with the cat made me cry but farm life is what it is. Good to hear the garden is coming to fruition.
I know, I'm so sad for him. I'm still wavering as he does seem to be getting better bit by bit so we'll see. I shall keep trying to find the positives.
Wow! Sounds like a really tough week but I am truly amazed by your positivty! I wanted to say I think you're doing a realy great job. You're dealing with adversity with the weather, crazy animal behaviour and some down right rotten luck, however you manage to stay positive and in my opinion at least are making the best decisions for both you and your animals. Keep at it, we are all behind you!!!
If I wasn't positive, I think I'd cry 🤣🤣 just gotta keep plugging away but thank you 🙏🏻
Sorry you've had such a rotten week. It won't help right away but could you look about for selling sights for a extra large walk in brassica cage that you could cover the market garden with? I know you can get extremely large ones, or if you can get your hands on scaffold poles possibly making one your self that you could always move if needed but would protect your crops from the pesky birds?
I don't think I could get one large enough for the whole thing but maybe smaller ones over vulnerable areas could work.
Just get what you can as and when you find it and expand as you go along I've used those metal chicken runs in the past and gazebo frames work also and people often give them away when the panels have torn etc
So next big project is a serious fence around the market garden?
Definitely. And trying to curb my swearing at sheep/goats 🤣
Same thing here, blackfly free beans, never known it before, rather pleased if there is a bonus to the strong winds.
Definitely! We need SOME bonus! 🤣
Criss cross skies!
I have heard that it’s a liver discharge and has nothing to do with reproduction. Sexing quail adults is sooo easy. Just need to find the right instructional material and give it a go
Mine is average but i tried my best and also went with some cold tolerant plants to grow. Dissapointing though.
Glad you're managing to get by. Definitely a good idea having decided on some colder tolerant plants.
For your weather being such a challenge your boxes are beautiful! 🤩
Thank you!
